拉斐尔·萨缪尔是英国马克思主义史学家中一个比较有特点的学者。和E.P.汤普森一样，他最初是一名社会史学家，从经济与社会的角度研究历史，尔后从社会史学家向文化史学家转型，从文化的角度来研究历史，尤其是研究下层民众的历史。他一生致力于史学民主化、大众化的事业，以他为主所发起的历史工场运动就是一场史学民主化运动，在英国产生了相当大的影响，他的学术思想也是围绕史学民主化这个中心展开的。然而，就在E.P.汤普森、霍布斯鲍姆等英国马克思主义史学家蜚声于中国的世界史学界时，拉斐尔·萨缪尔的名字却很少被人提及。这是笔者从事这项研究的一个重要原因。本书共分三个部分。第一部分是引言，主要介绍拉斐尔·萨缪尔的生平和他所生活的时代的政治和学术背景，以及国内外对拉斐尔·萨缪尔史学思想研究的现状。第二部分是本书的主干，着重于较系统地介绍拉斐尔·萨缪尔的史学思想。该部分又分为三章，每一章又细分为若干节。该部分论述的主要内容有：第一，拉斐尔·萨缪尔的史学大众化思想。拉斐尔·萨缪尔通过对记忆以及大众记忆的论述，提出了历史研究要重视非官方知识的主张。这种重视非官方知识观点的提出，打破了长期以来传统的政治精英史对历史的垄断，将历史研究的视角对准那些没有文献记载的下层民众。通过将广大的民众视为史学研究中“看不见的手”，拉斐尔·萨缪尔将那些史学的幕后工作者推到了前台，赋予他们在史学研究中的重要地位，同时也就意味着史学研究是大众的事业，史学成果也是众多人努力的结果。在此基础上，他还提出了人民的历史的主张，号召史学家都来研究人民的历史。最后，他还将他的主张付诸实践，这就是历史工场运动。通过这个运动，他打破了历史学家对历史研究的垄断，激发了民众学习和研究历史的积极性。第二，史学本体论。在该论中，拉斐尔·萨缪尔扩大了史料的范围，将视觉图像、神话也纳入重要的史料范畴之中，并对档案文献的真实性提出了质疑，指出历史中的虚构和艺术成分。在此基础上，他提出历史是混杂的观点，就是说，历史是融合了过去与现在、记忆与神话、书面记载与口头传说的混合物。第三，对英国民族性的考察。拉斐尔·萨缪尔认为，民族和民族主义都是虚构的，是神话，是想象的共同体。他对古代的民族以及激发民族情感的因素进行考察，揭示了民族的若干特征。此外，他在对“四个民族”的历史观以及英国的民族性进行考察后，认为统一的英国民族公共认同正在丧失，“四个民族”历史观是这种认同丧失的客观反映，英国人的爱国主义情感已经退却，转向多元文化主义以及对私人生活和平凡的追求。第三部分是结语，主要探讨了拉斐尔·萨缪尔的史学方法及其特点。笔者认为，拉斐尔·萨缪尔的学术思想浸润于他所生活的社会政治以及学术背景之中，社会政治生活为他的研究提供了素材；他的研究方法则获益于史学从经济社会史向新文化史的转型，在研究中，他大量采用了新文化史学的方法，这种方法为他更好地研究下层民众的历史帮助甚大。
