[内容简介] 本书从国际关系的角度切入太平天国运动(作者称为内战),特别着重英美各国在外交与军事上对太平天国战事的影响,着力呈现出中国的统治者和其民众的命运如何受到英国外交与商业利益的摆布,如何受到太平天国本身的非正统宗教和政治理念影响。书中作者将清军统帅曾国藩和太平军领袖洪仁玕作为讨论的核心人物。原著获2012年度坎迪尔奖(Cundill Prize)。
