[内容简介] “饮水思源“既是一句中国谚语,也是本书的主题所在,作者试图通过中国东南一隅的月影塘村映射出的对中国道德与“良心”的理解与实践,以及随着社会变革体现在道德层面的变迁。作者选取了“道德”这一对于中国人,尤其是中国农民来说具有重要意义的概念作为切入点,通过亲自观察、亲身参与、对村民访谈获取了大量第一手素材,这些素材恰恰构成了本书学术价值的重要组成部分。长期居于当地体验乡民日常生活的经历,不仅使欧爱玲教授可以亲身了解乡民如何谋生,如何处理家庭内外事务,如何与邻里亲朋相处,同时也让她有机会参与或观察一场场相关的仪式与事件,并与村民们进行深入对话,了解他们的道德话语如何表达出来。本书对月影塘村村民在这个政治、社会、文化各领域发生巨变的时代承担与其日常生活情境相关的道德责任的方式作了细致入微的呈现,并对当地道德责任的未来发展趋向做出了认真的思考与分析。

人类学家在研究道德话语时会感到特别棘手,因为叙述与检验一种文化的道德话语很容易被误解为要对那种话语所暗示的“道德”进行评判,而这恰恰不是人类学家的使命所在。但是,在文化种类多样、范围宽广的中国,研究道德话语却十分必要。改革开放以来,中国的经济生活与伦理价值观发生了剧烈变化。在不少国人眼中,传统的道德体系已经趋于瓦解。那么,留存于中华文化达干百年之久的道德话语是否也跟着消失了呢?欧爱玲教授对广东梅县客家乡村——月影塘的田野调查发现,当地人有关道德互惠的观念并未就此冻结。作为它们表现形式和外在内容的道德话语,反而随着时间推移与环境场域的革新不断进化,有时甚至超越一般意义上的等级秩序指向而变得极富弹性。月影塘的故事,或许正是城镇化经济辐射之下乡村社会关系在特殊文化背景中动态演变的缩影。
