本书以传播公地和媒介圈地的历史追溯为起点,从基于国家和市场之间的社会控制的社会学存在意义,到自治传播中的主体性抗争,再到参与式传播实践中双重民主诉求的三个层面,并结合在加拿大访学期间的参与式观察和第一手访谈资料,立体化呈现了另类媒体兴起的社会背景、生存空间、权力形态、实践作为以及价值困顿这五个相互关联的理论与实践问题,避免了对西方另类媒体的一般性描述,形成了概念界定、解释场域及评价体系上的创新。首先,鉴于另类媒体是一个松散、富有争议性且难以统一界定的概念,本书试图分层次从内容、空间和行动三个方面来界定西方左派图景中反对主流商业媒体并代表下层民众声音的另类媒体的内涵。在内容层面,另类媒体致力于呈现被主流商业媒体不予报道或忽视的事件、声音及观点;在空间的组织形态层面,另类媒体在不营利、非商业化定位的基础上起用非专业化的志愿者,在平行合作而非垂直等级的工作关系中,为社会上处于边缘的弱势群体提供参与和发表意见的机会与平台;在社会行动层面,通过内容和形式上的创新,另类媒体一方面可以挑战主流商业媒体的霸权地位,另一方面可以带来社会的改变,甚至通过直接参与社会运动引发社会变革。其次,为避免平面化地定义另类媒体并记录其实践轨迹,本书从纵向叙述传播公地和媒介圈地的历史背景入手,运用社会学马克思主义和自主论马克思主义的分析工具,立体化呈现了另类媒体的社会控制机制以及该机制下自治传播主体性斗争力量的来源,并将其表征参与式传播和激进民主的双重民主诉求具体细分为三个层面的民主实践,即基于反信息霸权的内容民主、基于参与式传播的空间民主以及基于社会运动的行动民主。再次,在超越简约的本质二元论的基础上,本书既对另类媒体行走于国家和市场之间的自治传播的民主实践给予肯定,又反思了其自身存在的价值困境:一方面,在影响力处于模糊不定的状态下,另类媒体相对于主流商业媒体而言究竟是一种替代性力量还是一种点缀性力量;另一方面,鉴于另类媒体这个概念的历史流变性以及实践中的复杂性,对另类媒体的评价要跳出制度性崇拜的围墙,透过另类媒体的形式民主,具体结合其传播的内容、运作的实践机制以及与社会运动的本质关联来判定其存在的实际意义和作用。最后,作为一种修正主流商业媒体弊端的传播机制,相较于20世纪初期不断兴起的西方媒体民主改革运动,另类媒体并非重建传播公地理想的唯一行动者。鉴于此,本书认为,持续行动的另类媒体、深入民主改革的主流媒体、广泛参与和支持民主传播的各阶层公众,是合力重建传播公地之路上最主要的行为主体。
